Yesterday, the cricket world witnessed a major upset as the United States of America (USA) defeated Pakistan in a nail-biting match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The USA, making their tournament debut, pulled off a stunning victory in the Super Over, sending shockwaves through the cricket community.

Pakistan’s Struggles Continue

Pakistan, known for their unpredictability, arrived at the tournament with a questionable form. They had recently lost to Ireland and suffered a 0–2 defeat against England in their previous series. The pressure was mounting, especially with their upcoming clash against arch-rivals India. Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Azam Khan, has been under intense scrutiny for his fitness and form, which added to the team’s concerns.

USA’s Impressive Start

On the other hand, the USA entered the tournament with impressive form, having defeated Bangladesh in their first series against a full-member nation. They began the tournament with a resounding victory against Canada, thanks to a brilliant 94 by Aaron Jones. The USA’s confidence was high, and they were determined to make a statement against Pakistan.

The Match

The match itself was a thrilling encounter. Pakistan, sent into bat, found themselves struggling at 26–3 within the first five overs. The USA bowlers, led by Nosthush Kenjige, maintained a tight grip on the game, making it difficult for Babar Azam and Shadab Khan to rotate the strike. Shadab Khan breathed some life into the Pakistan innings, while Babar chipped in with a couple of boundaries. However, Pakistan lost Shadab Khan and Azam Khan off successive deliveries, which was followed by the departures of Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed, leaving Shaheen Afridi with the task of providing a finishing kick. Shaheen stepped up with a crucial 16-ball 23, helping Pakistan reach 159.

USA’s Chase

In their pursuit of 160 runs, the USA got off to a sedate start as Monank Patel and Steven Taylor employed a cautious approach. Coming in at the departure of Taylor, Andries Gous got off the blocks quickly and allowed Monank to settle into his innings. The duo went about their business sensibly and looked assured out in the middle. Through their 68-run stand, the USA had their noses in front at the halfway mark. The USA seemed to stumble a bit, losing Monank and Gous in quick succession, but Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar did not let the game slip away from their grasp. It all came down to 15 runs needed off the final over, which turned to 12 runs off the last 3 balls. Jones’ six off the 4th ball and a boundary from Kumar on the last ball took the game to a Super Over.

Super Over Drama

In the Super Over, Aaron Jones set the tone for the USA, and they were also helped by Pakistan’s sloppiness with the ball and in the field, allowing them to post 18 on the board. Saurabh Netravalkar came out with flying colours in the Super Over, sticking to his plans despite being taken to the ropes a couple of times, to close out the game for the USA.

Post-Match Reactions

After the match, Monank Patel, the skipper of the USA, praised his team’s effort, saying it was a big achievement to beat Pakistan in the Super Over while facing them for the first time. He credited the bowlers for keeping Pakistan under 160 and appreciated the partnership between him and Gous. Babar Azam, on the other hand, acknowledged that Pakistan did not capitalise in the first six overs and lost back-to-back wickets, which made it difficult for them to build momentum.

Impact of the Loss

This defeat adds significant pressure to Pakistan’s next game against India, making it extremely crucial for them to bounce back. The loss also highlights Pakistan’s ongoing struggles in T20Is, which they need to address quickly to stay competitive in the tournament.

Conclusion

The USA’s historic win over Pakistan is a testament to their determination and teamwork. It marks a significant milestone in their cricket journey and sets the tone for their future performances in the tournament. For Pakistan, it is a wake-up call to rectify their weaknesses and come back stronger in their upcoming matches. The T20 World Cup 2024 has already seen its first major upset, and fans can expect more thrilling encounters as the tournament unfolds.
